A Sting Factor?

If the rumour is true - Sting will make his long awaited World Wrestling Entertainment debut at Survivor Series tomorrow night.

I first read about the possible appearance this morning before looking at the Survivor Series betting odds at 5Dimes.com, PaddyPower.com and SkyBet.com. I immediately went to check whether the news had played any impact in the betting markets specific to the main event.

The first port of call was the 5Dimes lines. In this morning's update, I noted how the odds for Team Authority had dipped slightly.

It's difficult to determine why the wrestling fans decided to punt on the heel team last night. As a stab in the dark, I'd guess it was customers were backing Team Authority due to the new stipulation that all the members of Team Cena, apart for Cena himself, will be fired should they lose.

If John Cena isn't getting fired, they could work out storyline reasons to bring back his team-mates by Monday.

On this side of the pond, the price for the main event told a conflicting story with both Paddy Power and Sky Bet.

When I checked the markets at both sportsbooks at 11:22pm GMT yesterday, Team Cena was 1/4 with Sky Bet while Paddy Power had them at a less-favourable 1/6. Team Authority, on the other hand, were 11/4 with Sky and 7/2 with Paddy Power.

At 11am this morning, Sky Bet had Cena's faction priced 1/5 with Team Authority 100/30. Over at Paddy Power, the babyfaces were 1/4 with their opponents 5/2.

The only thing I can draw from these changes is that the customers simply took the best prices available to them.

It's worth noting that Paddy Power odds for Team Cena have since come into line with Sky Bet's 1/5.

We might get to the point where the bettors start handicapping how the show will end and whether the direction the company goes with Sting will play a part, but as of right now - I'm sensing the rumour is having no impact whatsoever.

Odds taken from 5Dimes' Betting Board, the Wrestling Betting page at Sky Bet & Paddy Power's WWE Betting Markets.
