Goldberg And Lesnar To Close Mania - A Case Of Chinese Whispers?

I have noticed a lot of talk on Twitter mentioning there are reports of the Bill Goldberg versus Brock Lesnar match scheduled to close out WrestleMania.

I believe this to be the Internet's version of Chinese whispers. I've arrived at this conclusion because I have a good idea the source of where these writers got their story.

In this week's issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote - on the topic of WrestleMania and the Lesnar/Goldberg match - that 'based on current hints and direction looks likely to be presented as the main event on the show'.

The match may end up being the most pushed bout in the build-up to WrestleMania, and is technically the main event of the evening, but this does not necessarily mean it'll be the final match of the night.

There are a few examples that I can point to.

From the top of my head, WrestleMania X8 had The Rock versus Hulk Hogan as the most promoted fight of the night. The final match of the night saw Triple H challenge Chris Jericho for the World Championship.

The following year, Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon was the match that was advertised the most. It too went on ahead of title match.

It could also be argued that last year's WrestleMania meeting between The Undertaker and Shane McMahon inside the Hell in a Cell had the most time dedicated to it than Triple H's title match against Roman Reigns.

From a betting perspective, Betfair.com's WrestleMania 33 prop market, where customers can wager on who they believe will be in the main event of WrestleMania 34, DOES focus on the closing match of the night.

I had a look to see if the information, or rather possible misinformation, had any impact on the market. I noticed a few changes have been made since Monday.

The two selections I was obviously looking out for the most - Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg - haven't shortened. They're still both available at 4/7 each.

Braun Strowman's price has been cut from 20/1 to 16/1 (Jordan!). The remaining selections whose prices have dropped are interesting and make sense:

AJ Styles 6/4 to EVENS
John Cena 2/1 to 6/4
Randy Orton 13/2 to 5/1
Bray Wyatt 12/1 to 10/1
The Miz 50/1 to 25/1

It's very clear what has happened here. All of the Smackdown stars, who could potentially be in the WWE World Championship match, have been backed.

Without going out too much on a limb, I also believe it'll be at least two of the five names who'll be in the final match of the night.

Betfair's WWE WrestleMania prop markets are found under 'Special Bets' on the sportsbook menu at Betfair.com.
