If John Cena Is Ref : Fantasy Booking The Survivor Series And Beyond

In the most recent post where I noted that The Rock's Royal Rumble Winner Odds Had Halved, I wrote about the reports that John Cena, The Rock and 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin were on a list of candidates to be a special referee for the Brock Lesnar versus Jinder Mahal match at the Survivor Series. In the post, I wrote that 'for possible future storylines, it makes sense for John Cena to be put in this spot'. In hindsight, I should have expanded on this. The story was more to do with The Rock's odds being cut, so I thought I'd leave the explaining for another day.

Today is that day.

Here's my reasoning. This will include fantasy booking so, if this isn't your cup of tea, I'd look away now...

When John Cena returned to WWE in July, the company saw fit to have him named as a 'Free Agent'. It was its way to explain having Cena on both Smackdown and especially Raw for ratings purposes. Now, however, the company finds itself in a perfect spot to exploit John Cena's status because the company could use this to reason why he's the referee in a battle of the Raw and Smackdown Champions (he'll call it down the middle!) and then lead to another idea (I'm sure you know where I'm going with this one).

We already know that Mahal has said during his interview over in India that he would like to face John Cena at WrestleMania. Cena as a referee at the Survivor Series could lay the groundwork for this match to take place on April 8th.

I've been adamant that Mahal/Lesnar should end with neither wrestler losing, but - after thinking it through - they could have Mahal take the fall and then blame Cena for the loss. This could end with Mahal doing something to Cena post-match which would neatly explain something I'll get to later.

Following Survivor Series, they could have Cena written out until January (again!). Then, when he returns, they could have him win the Royal Rumble.

And this is where it sets up the other exploitation of Cena's free to roam pass.

As I've written before - if John Cena is the 2018 Royal Rumble winner, as a 'Free Agent' he should have the right to pick the champion he would like to challenge at Mania. Therefore, barring any title switches, he should get to choose Brock Lesnar or Jinder Mahal.

The post-Survivor Series beatdown by Mahal will be the reason why Cena chooses Mahal over Lesnar, so Cena doesn't look weak by not opting to challenge 'The Beast' for the Universal Championship.

Then, at the Elimination Chamber - which according to reports will be a Raw brand show this time - they could have the number one contender for Brock Lesnar established in  the Chamber rather than have the Universal Champ defend the strap in the match.

This would mean Roman Reigns wins the Elimination Chamber.

The end result will see Roman Reigns take on Brock Lesnar to become Universal Champion (this appears to be the plan they're locked in on) and John Cena challenging Jinder Mahal to become seventeen-time world champion (if this is what they want to do at Mania).

I had another idea where something happens between Lesnar and Cena at the Survivor Series and it leads to a match at the Royal Rumble with Lesnar going over, but Cena coming back later in the show to win the battle royal. I think the scenario I chose to run with makes the most sense for now.

It should go without saying that Cena is still my pick to win the Royal Rumble. Reigns is a close second.

  1. I like the post match beat down at survivor series that sets up cena and jinder.but I'm not so sure about the second one where cena has two matches. My idea was just yo have cena win the rumble match.

    1. I wasn't a fan of it after coming up with Cena losing to Lesnar at the Rumble, then deciding not to challenge him at Mania as it would make him look like he's picking the weaker guy.

    2. My ideal situation is to protect john rather than him getting pinned by lesnar. How will that help him? But what if jindser cost john the match. That's my suggestion as well but it isn't wise to have him compete in two matches.

  2. This post was great but I am not sure whether Cena vs Mahal at WrestleMania.

WWE did Roman vs Cena at a B level PPV. I won't be surprised if they give Cena his 17th title win at Royal Rumble instead of Wrestlemania and make him the Champion going into wrestlemania and drops it there to a guy who will carry Smackdown and Cena leaves WWE

With cena's schedule, I am not sure whether he will stay again after Wrestlemania

But still, it's a great well thought out post mate

    1. Thanks.

They've already had Cena tie their number at the Rumble, so I reasoned that they would have to go one step further and have Cena break the 'record' at WrestleMania, but - like you said - Cena's schedule after Mania is a factor.

  3. I know it's not possible but it would be awesome if Cena wins WWE championship in his home town Boston at clash of champions

  4. Jinder Mahal as champion at WM? i hope he drop title before that.

They do wrong things with title since AJ lose it to Cena at Royal Rumble.

    My opinion as fan.

  5. There have been a lot of stories that Jinder will hold onto the title until Wrestlemania - if that is the case it is an absolute banker that he will lose it to John Cena at WM (ps Skybet are 3-1 on Cena they have priced up the rumble)
