Bookie .vs. Blogger : Comparing Our Rumble Top 5s As Of January 8th 2018

It has been nearly two weeks since myself and a bookmaker met up to discuss our top five picks to win the 2018 Royal Rumble. When we last left off, we had conducted impromptu meeting following reports that the WWE Fast Lane 2018 main event would feature a fatal 5-way match for the WWE Championship. If this turns out to be accurate, it would raise doubt over any of the names listed winning the Royal Rumble, so we made a few adjustments to our lists.

There have been a few more changes made since then.

The Bookie
The last time we spoke, The Bookie had the following names in order:

1. Shinsuke Nakamura
2. Roman Reigns
3. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn schmoz finish
4. Dolph Ziggler
5. Batista

The Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn idea was thought up because The Bookie thought that one match WWE could do for WrestleMania would be a triple threat with Owens and Zayn going up against AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. A somewhat similar match-up has been announced for the Royal Rumble with the two wrestlers challenging AJ Styles in a 2-on-1 handicap match.
With Owens and Zayn potentially not being involved in the battle royal, The Bookie has removed the two names from third place and added Rusev instead.
He writes 'I picture a scenario now that Rusev is over where he's coming down the huge ramp and being welcomed to the ring by a singing Aiden English to take on AJ Styles.' He went on to add that 'it doesn't have to be Styles. It could be to challenge somebody else like Kevin Owens if they want to have Nakamura cost Styles the Championship to set up a midcard match at WrestleMania.'
The only other change that The Bookie has made is take Batista out of fifth place and put John Cena there instead. Cena - if you recall - was an honourable mention in the previous edition of Bookie .vs. Blogger.

Blogger
I have made one change and this was triggered by something Martin suggested in the comments section of the most recent Bookie vs. Blogger where he floated the idea of a person from Raw winning the Rumble and then go on to challenge Smackdown's champion.
As a result, I have removed Shinsuke Nakamura from fifth place and added Finn Balor. It was a tough call as I had Balor, Seth Rollins and Samoa Joe to put in fifth spot. I immediately ruled out Rollins because I have a feeling he could be squaring off against Jason Jordan at Mania after the little tease we saw on Raw last week when Rollins showed frustration towards his tag team partner. I also want to point out that I haven't placed a bet on Balor.

You can view all of the Bookie .vs. Blogger top 5s across our six meetings dating back to November 13th in the table below.

  1. I'm still on Nakamura. It's really the only logical option outside of Cena, who is rumored to be in a different match, and Reigns, who will probably win Elimination Chamber instead.

David, how come you feel Nakamura does not merit a place in your top five?

  2. Because I don't believe he has been used well since being brought up to the main roster.
And also, as I wrote above and in the last edition, anyone in the five-way at Fast Lane raises doubt.

  3. Forgot to mention another thing I've written in the past and that I sense it's Orton .vs. Nakamura at Mania.

  4. Ziggler is an interesting one... one the hell is the pay off for him dropping the US title?

    1. The payoff would be coming back, win the Rumble and aim for a title higher than what he thought he was too good for.

    2. It can only be that surely. Otherwise...... what a GEEK!!!!

    3. I have read an article where they reckon it'll end up with Ziggler claiming to have never lost and then go with both he and Roode as champions (just like with Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon in 1993/4). I dislike this idea!
