Rumble '17 Potential Winner Rankings (Jan 10th)

For the past few weeks, I've been writing about having a 'list' of potential Royal Rumble winners. I've been moving names up and down based on what I've seen or heard on WWE TV. A regular visitor, Jordan, asked me how it's looking after last night's Raw. So, here goes:

1. The Undertaker (Current best odds:6/4 Coral.co.uk and SportingBet.com)

Jordan's question asked whether I think The Undertaker's chance of winning the Rumble has increased. I'd say so. There's obviously other ways this can go, but I think we're either getting The Undertaker versus Roman Reigns or John Cena in a title match at WrestleMania. They made it clear that Undertaker is free to roam between Raw and Smackdown, so this gives WWE leeway to have Taker choose the champion in the days following the battle royal. If Undertaker chooses Cena, it'll give Stephanie McMahon another gripe against Mick Foley.
Babyfaces like Undertaker do not promise things like winning Rumbles and main eventing Manias if they aren't going to do so. He did that last night.

2. Braun Strowman (Current best odds: 8/1 Ladbrokes.com)

Notice that Braun Strowman was shown on screen when Undertaker confirmed that he'll be in the Royal Rumble? It could have been a tease that he and Undertaker will wrestle at Mania 33, but I'm going to overlook this for the time being because Undertaker promised he would win the Rumble and main event WrestleMania.
Strowman gets the nod in case WWE decides to go with Strowman challenging Reigns. This obviously depends on Reigns being Universal Champion.

3. Finn Balor (Current best odds: 8/1 Ladbrokes.com)

Finn Balor has now overtaken Chris Jericho on this list. It's more to do with downgrading Jericho than upgrading Balor, though.

4. Chris Jericho (Current best odds: 6/1 Ladbrokes.com and Coral.co.uk)

On Saturday morning, I was asked about the 2-on-1 handicap match. I wrote:
'If Reigns loses, then Chris Jericho should be the person who gets the result. So, they can go around for the next few weeks with both Owens and Jericho claiming to be double champions. If it plays out this way, Jericho's chance of winning the Rumble is near to extinct as it'll likely end with he and Owens fighting over the US Championship at Mania.'
I had moved Jericho down from the top of the list into third after the closing segment of Raw when it was teased that Jericho could win the Rumble and then challenge his best friend - Owens - for the Universal Championship.
Everything seems to be playing the way I envisioned with Kevin Owens likely to be without a title in the next few weeks and will compete against Chris Jericho for the US Championship at Mania after blaming the latter for dropping the Universal Championship.
The only reason why he remains on this list is because Kevin Owens is still Universal Champion.

Even though I have four names on this list, I think it's Undertaker's to lose.

  1. So wwe is still trying to push reigns? I'm not trying to suggest anything but its remarkable they want him to be pushed despite the fans booing him week in and week out. What are wwe trying to accomplish here?

    1. I did know. I just want to why wwe are so persistent on him. Why try something that won't work. Tbh Finn balor is someone I think could fill that void when he return s.Anyway He's main evented the past two wrestlemanias and hes been rejected in both of them.

    2. They're not bothered about his reaction anymore it seems, I'm cool with it so whatever, he's good in the ring & isn't the worst on the mic so he's somewhat entertaining, KO has been booked awfully

While this is most often true, it's also a pattern that if the announcers predict a wrestler will win... then he won't win.

  3. Good point with the announcer saying that. His interaction with steph alsp suggests hhh may have a part to play in how it all goes down.

    1. Doubt HHH will be involved in anything outside of Seth Rollins.

    2. Rollins to be in the final 4 becomes a tempting bet now. Storylinewise because it'll make the HHH sabotage even more dastardly if he's about to win. Matchwise because he's the architect and will be relied upon to create a good rumble.

  4. After last night I reckon it'll be Taker and Strowman as the final 2.

    1. Mid 90s. Have to consider Strowman and Balor.
