Note About Cena's Rumble Odds

I've just been listening to today's episode of Wrestling Observer Live and there was a story brought up on it that will likely start doing the rounds imminently.

Bryan Alvarez mentioned that he had received a text from somebody who told him John Cena is now a favourite to win the 2018 WWE Royal Rumble after Jinder Mahal said that he wanted to face Cena at WrestleMania 34 in an online interview segment that was done during the WWE Champion's current tour of India.

The fact is, John Cena is a joint-favourite, along with Roman Reigns, in the only Royal Rumble market that is currently available as of the time of writing (Kambi's are off the board).

Both Cena and Reigns are 9/4 with Paddy Power. However, Cena has been available at this price since July 4th - the day he returned to WWE after taking time off following this year's WrestleMania.

I'm sure that a number of wrestling news sites will end up writing about the Mahal interview playing a part in Cena's price falling, but this is not accurate. The drop came long before the weekend.

John Cena had opened at 8/1 when the market was first published on February 1st.

  1. I was thinking the same thing when I heard it... I was shouting abuse at my I-Phone... the wife thought I was going mad.

    1. I last checked the prices on Sunday after watching the Jinder Mahal clip and noticed they hadn't changed, so - when I heard Bryan say that - I checked them again to make sure.

Can't help but feel this will end up becoming a story people will refer to when it's Rumble time and it isn't even true.

    3. Yeah, caught it in the early hours and will write about it later.

It's all clearer now, the person emailed Bryan telling him Cena was fave and Bryan assumed it was because of Jinder's Q&A. Which is fair enough because the first thing I did when I saw the video was check to see if it had caused the bookies to move Cena to sole fave.
