How Kambi's WON Rumble 2018 Markets Were Settled

This week's issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter was published earlier today. Inside this edition is Dave Meltzer's review of the 2018 WWE Royal Rumble, which will settle a number of betting markets that the Kambi's oddsmakers released over the weekend.

The markets of note were specials where customers could have a bet on how the newsletter's editor rated the matches on the card. There were three kinds of markets available ahead of the pay-per-view. One was a straight-up market where customers could have a bet on the match they predicted would receive the most stars in the review, a handful of over/under markets where customers could bet on individual matches and a final special where customers could get 7/1 odds on any of the bouts receiving one of Meltzer's famous five stars (or above!).

The highest rated match for the 2018 Royal Rumble event went to the men's battle royal. It received four-and-a-quarter stars. Therefore, the 7/1 special will obviously be settled as a loss.

Royal Rumble 2018 Highest Rated Match In The Wrestling Observer Betting Odds

As you can see in the table above, the winning selection opened at 2/1. It had drifted out to 5/2 by the following morning, but was backed during the day. The last price I have for it was at 9:30PM GMT on Sunday evening where it had dropped to 6/4.

The early birds appeared to have backed the Smackdown Tag Team Championship contest as it fell from 2s into 5/4 in its first day. In my opinion, the reason why it fell is because Meltzer had voiced hopes that the match would be one of the best on the card in the days leading up to the show. He evidently felt let down as his review stated that the finish, where The Usos won the best of three falls match by going 2-0,  'ruined it'. With that said, the match received three stars, so was above average on the scale.

The over/under specials were quite difficult to follow over the weekend as - upon every visit I made to the websites - there were no apparent changes to the markets. Therefore, I'll write about each special and point out what the opening prices were and indicate which option was the winner.

AJ Styles .vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
The line for what turned out to be the PPV' opener was set at three-and-three-quarter stars.

Exactly 3.75 Stars
Under 3.75 Stars

9/10

The match went under, so - if any customers took the 9/10 - their accounts will be credited with winnings.

The Usos .vs. Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin
As noted above, this match received three stars in Meltzer's review of the event.

Under 3.75 Stars
27/1 10am

17/20

Just like with the opener, the bookies set the line at 3.75. The Under won here as well.

Men's Royal Rumble
Shinsuke Nakamura's win in the men's Royal Rumble was the match of the night. The bookies expected it to receive high praise as they set the line at 4 - the highest of the weekend.

Men's Rumble
Over 4 Stars
Exactly 4 Stars
Under 4 Stars
27/1 10am

Any punters that backed the 'Over' won here.

Seth Rollins and Jason Jordan .vs. Cesaro and Sheamus
Cesaro and Sheamus' title victory over Rollins and Jordan was given two-and-a-quarter stars. The line was set at three-and-a-half, so it's another win for the under backers.

Raw Tag Team Championship
Over 3.5 Stars
Exactly 3.5 Stars
Under 3.5 Stars

27/1 10am
17/20
9/4

Brock Lesnar .vs. Braun Strowman .vs. Kane
The triple threat match for the WWE Universal Championship - which saw Brock Lesnar retain the strap against Braun Strowman and Kane - received two stars by Meltzer.

Universal
Championship
Over 3.5 Stars
Exactly 3.5 Stars
Under 3.5 Stars

27/1 10am
19/20
9/4
19/20

The bookmakers set the line at three-and-a-half, so it was another one for the unders.

Women's Royal Rumble
The women's Royal Rumble match - won by Asuka - was given three-and-a-quarter stars.

Women's Rumble
Over 2.75 Stars
Exactly 2.75 Stars
Under 2.75 Stars
27/1 10am
19/20
9/4
19/20

The line was set at 2.75, so this will be settled in favour of the 'Over' if hasn't been been already.

Hopefully, the bookmakers will have Observer specials up for this month's Elimination Chamber PPV. If so, I'll have them covered here.

When available, Wrestling Observer star rating specials are found on the websites that publish betting odds from Kambi. A few examples can be found below:

  1. Would have been fun to have NXT lines as well. First WWE 5 star match in 6.5 years!

    1. It would have been interesting to see how they would have priced up the '5 Star' market considering NXT TakeOvers always deliver. Was bound to hit the 5 star eventually. In fact, I thought Dunne/Bate would have received five last year.
