The Betfair Sportsbook first opened a market where its customers could bet on wrestlers and other celebrities making a live in-house appearance at WrestleMania two months ago. Back then, a Hulk Hogan appearance seemed unlikely. In the aforementioned post, I wrote: 'I believe there will come a day when Hulk Hogan returns to WWE(..)it's a question of when. Is 2017 too soon?'
Shortly after the odds went up, Hogan's voice appeared on a WWE Network commercial. I figured this was the start of a slow process to bring him back following WWE's 2015 decision to distance itself from Hogan due to racist comments that were made when being secretly recorded.
The price on Hogan appearing live at WrestleMania 33 opened at 7/4. This number drifted out to 2/1 by September 10th and had reached 5/2 when I last observed the market on Thursday evening.
His appearance is now showing at 5/4 indicating that wrestling fans have noticed stories in the news regarding Hogan having settled his legal issues with the Gawker website and have punted on him being clear to return to WWE.
It isn't as easy as that, though.
WWE would have to ensure that its sponsors and partners are okay with a re-association. However, the commercial with Hogan's voice on indicates that there are moves in that direction.
The entire market, and prices as of the time of publishing, can be viewed below:
Here's some information you may like to know concerning the rest of the selections on this list:
- Maria Sharapova's price has drifted out from 33/1
- Kelly Kelly opened 20/1
- Michelle McCool jumped up from 20s
- Ted Dibiase Sr opened 16/1
- Rey Mysterio's price has stuck at 16/1
- CM Punk was 13/2, moved up to 9/1 and now increased further to 16/1
- Batista opened 13/2, drifted to 8/1 and was then backed down to 13/2
- Jon Stewart went from 8/1 to 6/1 on the first day the market opened. He was then cut into 11/2 by the end of September
- Tommy Dreamer came in from 33/1 to 28/1 on day one. His price was trimmed to 10/1 by September 30th and now moved down to 3/1.
- Vin Diesel opened 3/1, was improved to 10/3 within a few weeks and then drifted out again to 4/1
- Steve Austin opened 7/2, was moved up to 4/1 and was then backed into 3/1
- Ronda Rousey opened 7/4, was increased to 11/5, moved further out to 5/2 and remains 5/2 despite hints that she could be at the show- Kurt Angle opened 6/4, drifted to 13/8 and now moved up to 7/4
- Shawn Michaels opened 7/2. As he is 'Mr. WrestleMania' it makes sense that the customers moved in on him making an appearance. His price dropped to 2/1 then lowered some more to 6/4
- Goldberg opened 4/5, went out to EVENS but was then backed into 1/2 following his return to the company. It's worth noting that Goldberg has claimed the Survivor Series is his last match, If this is true, there's still a possibility of him being at WrestleMania as a Hall of Fame inductee.
- The Rock opened 1/4, moved out to 2/5 but then backed into 1/3. Still a better number now than you were offered originally
- Rhyno was the biggest mover. He opened 33/1 and I published a post noting the great price. Others jumped on and he was cut to 6/1 shortly afterwards. His price continued to plummet as it was 6/4 three weeks later and is now down to 1/5
- Mick Foley opened 4/1, was backed into 1/2 within three weeks and then cut further to 1/5
- The Undertaker has stayed at 1/10
