White Wins IWGP IC Title On Road To Wrestle Kingdom 14

There has been somewhat of a detour in regards to what I thought the road to Wrestle Kingdom 14 would end up being in regards to the IWGP Intercontinental Championship.

In the main event of this morning's NJPW Destruction in Kobe show, Jay White defeated Tetsuya Naito to become the IC titleholder.

Jay White Wins IWGP Intercontinental Championship At NJPW Destruction In Kobe

If you read THIS POST from earlier this week, you would have seen that I expected Naito to be holding the strap going into night one of Wrestle Kingdom, successfully defend it  and then head off to night two to take on whoever has won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship match.

I suppose it's possible Naito regains the title either before or on the first night of Wrestle Kingdom 14, but it's safe to say that - for now - Jay White is now a confirmed part in the equation after also talking about wanting to be a double champion.

With that said, Naito is now in a position to win a title on both January 4th and 5th.

As it currently stands, and this could obviously change if they go with Naito regaining the strap by night two, the potential main event for January 5th is one of  Kazuchika Okada .vs. Jay White or White .vs. Kota Ibushi.

For what it's worth, Kambi had the former at 15/2 while a White .vs. Ibushi meeting was 33/1 when the bookmakers were accepting wagers last weekend.

Ibushi .vs. Naito was a 13/10 favourite and I would not give up hope on that one being the January 5th final  even after today's result.
