NJPW WrestleKingdom 14 Night One LIVE

As I'm watching NJPW WrestleKingdom 14 live, I thought I'd attempt a live blog during the show.

In this post, I'll publish the closing odds of Kambi's match markets.

Times will be in GMT.

8:07AM
Night one of Jushin Liger's swansong is about to start with his eight-man tag match.

The team led by Liger closed as 2/13 favourites.

Date/Time

31/12 5:30PM

3/1
4/1 7:30AM
2/13
7/2

As you can see, in the table above, Liger's team started off as 1/4 faves when the market was first opening on December 27th. The favourites were then cut to 1/5 by New Year's Day.

8:29AM
Wow, the outsiders won that one. Liger took the fall to Ryusuke Taguchi, so he did the job to the 'current star'. However, I thought tonight/today would have seen him win and then he lose tomorrow night.

Next up is another eight-man.

8:33AM
Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, Shingo Takagi, EVIL and SANADA) are doing their entrances for the match against Suzuki-Gun's El Desperado, Taichi, Minoru Suzuki and Zack Sabre, Jr.

The market for this match was first published last week. The odds were stationary right up to this morning when Suzuki-gun was taken down from 5/4 into EVS.

With Suzuki-gun lowered, the Los Ingobernables de Japon selection was moved up from 11/20 to 7/10.

8:50AM
Suzuki-gun won, so - even though it's another loss for the faves - there's a sign that the winners were backed going into today's show.

Another eight-man is up next. This time, CHAOS stable members going up against Bullet Club.

Bullet Club opened as 13/25 favourites last week. The team was cut into 11/25 a couple of days ago and was down to 7/20 when I checked in this morning.

As a result, CHAOS went from 13/10 to 19/10 with a stop at 8/5 in-between.

9:06AM
CHAOS won against Bullet Club. It's a result that makes sense as Hirooki Goto was the person who scored the win for his team. His opponent for tomorrow night - KENTA - was on the opposing side.

The IWGP Tag Team Championship match is being introduced now. As you'll see below, the titleholders - The Guerrillas of Destiny (Tanga Loa and Tama Tonga) - are 7/10 favourites against the World Tag League winners, FinJuice (David Finlay and Juice Robinson).

The challengers are EVS.

9:28AM
FinJuice won the tag titles, so that's another one for the underdogs.

The Texas death match for the IWGP United States Championship contest follows.

Jon Moxley started off as a 11/20 favourite to go over the current champ - Lance Archer (5/4) - when the market was first published.

Within a day, Moxley's odds had reduced to 1/2 and then - on New Year's Eve - had dropped to 1/3. They have remained at this price right up until the ring introductions.

9:52AM
Moxley regained the IWGP US Championship. He'll now defend the title against Juice Robinson on night two.

As for night one - the next bout is for  the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

This is the first match of the event that I've actually bet on. I wagered on Hiromu Takahashi when the market was first installed on November 9th.

At the time, the challenger to Will Ospreay's title was 11/20. He has been 11/25 for the last week.

Ospreay started out at 5/4, but closed at 8/5. There was a time in early December when his odds were lowered from 7/4 into 2/1, but they were pushed back out to 7/4 a couple of days after Christmas.

10:30AM
Hiromu Takahashi beat Will Ospreay after a very good match.

Now, we're onto the IWGP Intercontinental Championship match between Jay White and his challenger, Tetsuya Naito.

If you've been following my NJPW posts, you'll know that I want Naito to leave the two nights as the double champ. To do so, he needs to defeat Jay White for the IC strap.

It should go without saying that I've wagered on Naito to win here as well as in the outrights.

As for the market itself, Kambi first began taking bets on November 9th. At the time, the challenger was a 2/5 favourite.

Naito's odds fell to 2/7 by the evening of December 3rd and were then lowered to 1/4 by December 16th.

A win for Jay White closed at 5/2. This was up from the opening 7/4. He was available at 9/4 for a fortnight from December 3rd.

11:18AM
Naito wins!

Next up is the IWGP Heavyweight Championship match which will see Kazuchika Okada defend his strap against the G1 Climax winner - Kota Ibushi.

The market opened with Ibushi a slight favourite over Okada as he was 4/5 to the champion's 9/10.

As you can view below, there was a back-and-forth between both selections and - last week - both men were at 17/20 pick 'em.

Okada closed as a 4/6 favourite.

I thought Naito winning the IC strap followed by Ibushi winning the other title would have made for a good story with the double champion winning belts on successive nights, but it seems the consensus - including people who know far more about wrestling than me, like Dave Meltzer -believes Okada winning against Ibushi makes the most sense if it sets up Naito beating Okada after Naito fell short at the Tokyo Dome a couple of years ago.

12:12PM
Okada won the match.

This now means that the champion versus champion match will be Okada versus Naito.

Today's losing wrestlers - Jay White and Kota Ibushi - will wrestle each other in another match on tomorrow's card.
