A Look Back At The Betting Odds From Past WrestleManias : Part V

Welcome to the fifth and final part of a series where I have taken a look back at the WrestleMania betting odds since WrestleMania XXV. In today's post, I'll be concentrating on the most recent WrestleMania, which took place on April 7th last year.

As with all of the previous posts dedicated to this subject, I'll be using the prices that were available at the 5Dimes Sportsbook & Casino.

The WrestleMania XXIX pay-per-view opened with a trios match with The Shield taking on the team made up of The Big Show, Sheamus and Randy Orton. This match took place during the earlier stages of The Shield's push and the odds indicated as such. They were favoured at a price of -700 (1.14 EU, 1/7 UK) with the makeshift trio +400 (5.00 EU, 4/1 UK). Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose won the match to make it 1-0 to the betting favourites.

Match two on the card was a battle between Mark Henry and Ryback. When the lines opened Ryback was a heavy favourite. At one point he was available at -420 (1.24 EU, 5/21 UK) with Henry an underdog at +300 (4.00 EU, 3/1 UK).

Mark Henry evened things up in the betting stakes by being the first dog of the evening to win.

The Tag Team Titles were up for grabs in the third match. The duo of Kane and Daniel Bryan - Team Hell No - were unfavoured in the betting for this encounter. Their price was set at +250 (3.50 EU, 5/2 UK) with the team of Dolph Ziggler & Big E. Langston favoured by -350 (1.29 EU, 2/7 UK).

Bettors who took Team Hell No profited from their punt when Daniel Bryan scored the winning pinfall.

Fandango made his WWE debut against Chris Jericho in the fixture that followed the tag team match. As it was Fandango's first match, the odds were heavily in favour of him being the winner. He was marked up at -800 (1.13 EU, 1/8 UK) with Jericho available at +425 (5.25 EU, 17/4 UK).

The debutant won the match and balanced things out in the contest between favourites and underdogs.

A World Heavyweight Championship clash between Alberto Del Rio and Jack Swagger took place in the middle of the card.

Swagger, who had won the Elimination Chamber match to get the title shot, was  +320 (4.20 EU, 16/5 UK) whilst the champion was backed at a price of -460 (1.22 EU, 5/23 UK).

Del Rio retained after forcing Swagger to submit. At this point, the favourites were back ahead from a betting perspective.

Speaking of faves, the regular lock of WrestleMania wagering took followed the World Heavyweight Championship match when The Undertaker took on CM Punk.

The Undertaker's odds were at an incredible -2000 (1/20 UK) with his opponent available at +1000 (11.00 EU, 10/1 UK).

The Undertaker's WrestleMania win streak continued as did the likely winners from a betting perspective, who were now 4-2 with two matches to go.

The penultimate bout on the card was the No Holds Barred fight between Triple H and Brock Lesnar. As Lesnar had won their first meeting back at SummerSlam 2012, the likely finish for this match was a Triple H win. The odds compilers also went with this theory and had HHH favoured at a price of -560 (1.18 EU, 5/28 UK) with Lesnar at +370 (4.70 EU, 37/10 UK).

Lesnar's loss meant the betting favourites once again won out.

If the CM Punk vs The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar vs Triple H matches were predictable on paper, the main event was as well. In 2012, John Cena did the job for The Rock knowing the favour would be returned a year later.

The line makers and bettors knew this, as well. The Rock was priced up at a huge +1160 (12.60 EU, 58/5 UK) to win and therefore retain the WWE Title. Cena was marked up at -2480 (1/124 UK) to leave New Jersey with the belt.

As we know, the predictable finish occurred and the betting favourites made it 6-2 on the night.

It will be interesting to see whether the faves manage to sweep the board this Sunday. Judging by recent pay-per-views, it's not that hard to discount. However, and as I have shown over the past five posts, betting underdogs do win at WrestleManias.

I'll be making frequent posts throughout the week as WrestleMania XXX draws near and more betting sites where I expect WrestleMania 30 odds markets to be opened start posting lines.

If this is the last time you visit WWELeaks before Sunday, enjoy the show and good luck with your bets.

  1. im sure the so called insider betting didn't start till after this ppv because the odds recently have been more like -2000 for nearly every match since for the favs!!!! i mean the last ppv just before elimination chamber all the matches except NAO were all -16000 for the favs

  2. Already you can see Daniel Bryan to beat Triple H at -4500 and to win championship at -2750 plus Undertaker to win is -11000 compare these to last and definitely there is a big difference

  3. Insider betting had been going on for years before WrestleMania XXIX.

The odds used in this series are the earliest numbers and not how they closed.

For instance, if I had been writing about the Elimination Chamber PPV, I would have written about the Outlaws as underdogs because that's how they opened and where the value was for the bettor.

    1. I don't have them at hand.

I remember you had asked about the Mark Henry and Ryback match before.

The word going around on the Sunday morning was that the match finish was being rebooked (heard this on the Wrestling Observer podcast that morning). So, if Dave and Bryan were aware that the finish was being changed, it wouldn't have taken long for the word to get out.

I remember this because I put a few pounds on Henry to win after hearing about the change. Henry was still an outsider when I placed my bet that morning.
