Kurt Angle's Royal Rumble Odds Drop & More

Kurt Angle's odds on winning next year's WWE Royal Rumble have continued to fall in the market available from the Betfair Sportsbook.

The wrestler, who is set to finish up with TNA Wrestling, was originally priced as a 66/1 shot to win the annual battle royal to determine a challenger for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. He is now available at 33/1.

As noted, Angle has announced that he will not be signing a new deal with TNA. I surmise that this led to some fans predicting he'll return to WWE in 2016 and win the battle royal.

I have noted in previous posts concerning Kurt Angle that I cannot see WWE ever putting him in a strong position like main eventing a WrestleMania if he were to return to the company. I base this on the reasons behind his departure from the organisation in 2006 as well as the fact the higher ups didn't seem keen to re-sign him when his TNA deals have been up for renewal.

It wasn't Kurt Angle's odds that have shortened since my last look through Betfair's Royal Rumble odds.  Other names of note are The Undertaker and The Rock.

The Undertaker's return (or should this now be 'returns', considering he is back again?) came in the period I last observed his price. He has dropped from 50/1 to 33/1.

The aforementioned Dwayne Johnson has also seen his price descend from 50s to 33. Even though he hasn't returned to WWE just yet, his name has been tied to WrestleMania 32 speculation. He has also been moved from the alumni to the current roster page on the WWE website. This week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter also reported that there has been 'serious talks' about doing something with The Rock before the end of 2015.

Cesaro - who was available at odds of 28/1 when the market first opened - is now 10/1.

Another name whose odds have decreased is Kevin Owens. He has gone from 13/2 to 11/2.

With outsiders' odds shortening, the traders have re-adjusted the prices available for some of the likely chances. For example, the three wrestlers sitting at the top of the board - Brock Lesnar, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns - all have better odds than they did over the summer.

Lesnar has moved from 3/1 to 9/2, Rollins is also 9/2 but had been 7/2 and Reigns has moved out to 5/1 from 9/2.

As with most antepost markets, new selections have been added since I last checked in. The new additions range from Sting (who I did mention in a previous post) at 20/1 all the way to Hornswoggle at 250/1.

  1. I'm pretty sure the WHC match at WM is 1 of 3 scenarios:

Lesnar-Reigns-Rollins triple header (to play off the finish from last year)
Shield triple header (long been a rumored match that I get a sense they've held off on)
Lesnar-Reigns (WM rematch at WM sound familiar?)

Based on this it's hard to predict who will win the RR at this stage. They probably don't want the same reaction they had with Reigns two years in a row. A face win should be in the cards.

No matter what happens I think Reigns will compete for the WHC at WM. Paddy Power already have a market up for who will compete in this title match. Interested in hearing your analysis here too, Mr Taylor.

    1. I like your idea of the three wrestlers from last year meeting up again.

I have been going back and forth on this. The ideas I have rest on what happens with The Rock as I have a feeling it will be Rock versus Lesnar rather than Rock vs HHH. This means Lesnar is out of the title picture for WrestleMania.

I then have the same idea as you of Reigns versus Lesnar and I have thought of a good way to have Reigns win and then sort of drown out the bad reaction it could generate by having Sheamus come down to cash in. in that scenario, I think the audience would be more in favour of Reigns so the event ends on a positive with Reigns overcoming Sheamus.

This will also set up Reigns versus Sheamus for a spring feud so Lesnar can go off for his usual post-WrestleMania break.

      It's a wacky idea, I know!

    2. By the way, I should have been clear about who is the champ - Lesnar wins it at the Royal Rumble.
