Lesnar's SummerSlam Opponent To Be Announced

On last night's episode of WWE Raw, it was revealed that Brock Lesnar's opponent for SummerSlam will be announced during the Smackdown that will be taped tonight, but aired on Thursday.

This is interesting for numerous reasons. For example, it'll allow us to see how bets on 'Brock Lesnar's SummerSlam Opponent' could end up being paid out in a few weeks.

A number of betting websites had opened a book where customers could bet on who they thought would end up wrestling Lesnar at SummerSlam. This market was first published on June 16th. The market was up and down a few times since that time, but was removed shortly before Raw. Below are the early and closing prices.

Early and Closing Odds For 'Brock Lesnar's SummerSlam Opponent'

Of all the names on the board, the three that saw any serious action were Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens and Randy Orton.

Ambrose's price descent coincided with his WWE Title win while the other two selections' odds dropping can be attributed to wishful thinking and speculation. In the case of Randy Orton, his return is imminent, so the customers took the 14/1 because it was a decent price to take with the knowledge that WWE needs something big for Orton's return.

The timing of the announcement is bizarre considering it'll be two days before Lesnar's UFC 200 fight against Mark Hunt. If the bout does not go in favour of Lesnar, and he ends up being knocked out, he could potentially face a medical suspension. SummerSlam is in New York - a State where professional wrestling is still governed by its Athletic Commission.

WWE is evidently having a gamble of its own.

This market was available under 'WWE' on the sportsbook menu at 32Red.com and other betting websites with WWE Specials.

  1. The ambrose idea doesn't make much sense to me because WWE would then be showing their cards to how the Battleground PPV will play out. Since Ambrose is champion they cant say "Ambrose vs. Lesnar for the championship" because then that would tell everyone that Ambrose will win at Battleground. So using this logic, Rollins, Reigns and Amborse would all be bad bets IMO. I like the Orton bet at lot at 14/1 along with Owens but with Owens it would basically end all his current fueds and create one with someone we won't see a lot of till SummerSlam. Orton and Lesnar makes the most sense because both aren't back so the timing would work great with both.
