How Kambi's SummerSlam 2018 Observer Markets Were Settled

In a post published yesterday, I took a look back at the NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn IV Wrestling Observer star rating markets now that this week's issue of the newsletter - with a review of the event - has been released. I once again have this week's issue of the Observer (subscription required) back in front of me and shall  take a retrospective look through the SummerSlam 2018 star ratings specials to see what were the winning selections in each of the markets.

I'll start off with the Over/Under markets and then cover two more outrights that customers could have bet on last week.

Over/Under Betting

Almas and Vega .vs. Rusev and Lana
The first match of the night was the mixed tag team encounter which saw Zelina Vega get a pinfall for her and Andrade 'Cien' Almas over Lana and Rusev. The match was given one-and-a-quarter stars by the newsletter editor. This fell below the bookie's line of two.

The market opened with the eventual winning selection at 9/10. The 'Over' was at 19/20 and those looking to wager on the bout receiving two stars exactly were offered 2/1.

Cedric Alexander .vs. Drew Gulak
Cedric Alexander's successful WWE Cruiserweight Title defence against Drew Gulak was given a line of three-and-a-quarter stars by the oddsmakers. They priced up the 'Over' at 19/20, the 'Under' at 21/20 and 'Exactly 3.25 Stars' at 2/1.

Those who backed the 'Exactly' were on the winning option as Meltzer's rating met the bookie's prediction.

The B-Team .vs. The Revival
The WWE Raw Tag Team Championship match was given one-and-a-half stars in Meltzer's review of the PPV.  The line was set at 2 stars and opened with the 'Over' at 23/20, 'Exactly' at 9/5 and 'Under' at 19/20.

By Sunday evening, the 'Over' had fallen to EVENS. Those who backed the 'Under' at any point over the weekend were the winners here.

Dolph Ziggler .vs. Seth Rollins
Seth Rollins' Intercontinental Championship victory over Dolph Ziggler was forecasted to get three-and-three quarter stars by Kambi. They got it spot on as Meltzer did indeed grade the match with this amount.

The market remained stationary throughout the weekend with the 'Over' offered at EVS, the eventual winner - 'Exactly 3.75 Stars' - 2/1 and the 'Under' also at EVS.

Bludgeon Brothers .vs. The New Day
The New Days disqualification victory over The Bludgeon Brothers in the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championship match was given three-and-a-half stars in the review. This went over the bookie's line of two-and-three-quarter stars.

When it was priced up, the 'Under' was 11/10, 'Exactly 2.75 Stars' was 2/1 and the winning 'Over 2.75 Stars' was 9/10.

Braun Strowman .vs. Kevin Owens
Braun Strowman's short squash of Kevin Owens was given the lowest rating og the show - half a star. This fell way under the bookie's prediction of 2.75 Stars.

The winning selection - 'Under 2.75 Stars' - was favourite, however. It was available at 17/20 throughout the weekend with the other selections - 'Over 2.75' and 'Exactly 2.75' - at 23/20 and 41/20 respectively.

Carmella .vs. Becky Lynch .vs. Charlotte Flair
The bookie set the line for the WWE Smackdown Women's Championship match at two-and-a-half stars. Meltzer rated it a star higher than that.

Those who backed 'Over 2.50 Stars' at even money had bets settled in their favour. The other selections 'Exactly 2.50' at 2/1 and 'Under 2.50' also at EVS were obviously graded as losers.

AJ Styles .vs. Samoa Joe
The WWE Championship match was given the most stars in Meltzer's review of the PPV. It was rated four-and-a-quarter. Therefore, it beat the bookie's line by a quarter of a star.

The market opened with 'Exactly 4 Stars' offered at 2/1, the 'Under' was EVS and the winning 'Over 4 Stars' was EVS.

I'll write a little more about this match in the next secctions.

Daniel Bryan .vs. The Miz
The Miz's win over Daniel Bryan had three-and-three quarter stars under Meltzer's review. This fell dead on the bookie's line.

As you can see in the table above, the oddsmakers cut the 'Under 3.75' from 9/10 into 17/20 during the weekend. This was quite surprising to me when I witnessed the move as myself and others who discussed the star ratings over the weekend felt the match had potential to be the highest rated match on the card.

The winning selection was 2/1 when the market was first installed, but was then slightly increased to 41/20 late on Sunday evening.

Finn Balor .vs. Baron Corbin
One star was given to the short Demon Balor versus Baron Corbin match. This obviously fell below the bookmaker's expectation of two-and-a-half.

The winning selection was priced at 11/10 while the 'Over 2.50' was 9/10 and 'Exactly 2.50 Stars' was 2s.

Shinsuke Nakamura .vs. Jeff Hardy
The line for the US Championship match was set at two-and-a-half stars. I anticipated this match to end in a no-contest of some sort following interference from Randy Orton, so thought about placing a wager on the 'Under'. I didn't in the end. It was a bad decision on my part because the match - even though it didn't end up going the way I felt it would - was given only two stars from Meltzer.

The winning selection was 27/20 in the times when the market was up. They had 'Over 2.50' at 3/4 and 'Exactly 2.50' at 2/1.

Alexa Bliss .vs. Ronda Rousey
The semi-main event - which saw Ronda Rousey become WWE Raw Women's Champion over Alexa Bliss - had two stars awarded to it in the writer's review of the match. This was three quarters below the bookie's line.

Those who may have wanted to bet on this match would have found the eventual winning selection a 17/20 favourite. 'Exactly 2.75' was 43/20 and 'Over' the line was 11/10.

Brock Lesnar .vs. Roman Reigns
The main event was given two-and-a-half stars in the review. This fell under Kambi's line of three-and-a-quarter.

Bettors could have backed 'Under 3.25' at 21/20 over the weekend. The losing selections - 'Over 3.25' and 'Exactly 3.25' - were 17/20 and 9/4 respectively.

WWE SummerSlam 2018 - Observer Star Rating Results

Highest Rated Match Of The Night Betting
On Friday, right up to late-Sunday, Kambi was accepting wagers on what would receive the most stars in Meltzer's review of SummerSlam.

When it was first priced up, the bookies had the WWE Championship match as an even money favourite. It, along with two other selections, were snipped within the first day.

As I wrote above, I thought the Daniel Bryan .vs. The Miz match would get the honours. The punters evidently thought so as well as the selection went from 2/1 into 6/4.

In the end, it was the bookie's favourite from the start that was the correct selection.

Exact Star Rating Betting
Another market customers would have seen over the weekend was a special where people could punt on the 'Exact star rating of the highest rated match on the card'.

The selections, along with their respective odds, can be viewed below.

The winner - 'Exactly 4.25 Stars' - was a 2/1 second-favourite.

Hopefully, I'll have coverage of the Hell in a Cell 2018 star ratings markets if/when they're published in time for the September PPV.

  1. I wouldn't be shocked if they keep the line for AJ VS Joe as 4.5 at HIAC
