G1 Climax 29 Observer Star Ratings Betting Update For July 25th

There is a new bout to beat when it comes to being the best match of this year's NJPW G1 Climax tournament.

The current issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter was published this morning. In the edition are Dave Meltzer's reviews of the G1 matches that have occurred since last week's update.

Meltzer gave the Kazuchika Okada versus Will Ospreay match - from Sunday's A Block round - a high scoring five-and-three-quarter stars.

As it stands, and things can absolutely change with there still being eleven nights of matches remaining, Okada .vs. Ospreay is looking to win Kambi's market in which customers could place wagers on the bout that receives the highest star rating in Meltzer's reviews of the shows.

The bout had started off at 7/1 when the market was initially published last month. It was moved to 11/2 in early July and was then taken to 5/1 on July 12th.

It was still at 5s when I last looked at the market at 9:30AM BST yesterday morning.

Now that the most recent issue has been published, Kambi will also settle a selection of Over/Under markets that were created for some of the key tournament matches. The remainder of this post will look at how the betting went.

Starting with the main event from night five...

Kota Ibushi .vs. Will Ospreay
Kambi had set the line for Kota Ibushi versus Will Ospreay at 4.75.

The first change that was made to the market came with the option to bet on the match receiving 'Exactly 4.75 Stars' lowered from 41/20 to 2/1. Then, a few days after that - and with it clear that both wrestlers had injuries heading into their bout - the oddsmakers cut the 'Under' from 3/4 into 13/25 and moved the 'Over' up from 13/10 to 33/20.

Meltzer graded the match five stars, so the winning selection turned out to be the 'Over'.

Tomohiro Ishii .vs. Jon Moxley
There was another five star match in the main event of night six when Jon Moxley beat Tomohiro Ishii.

Kambi had the line set at four-and-a-quarter stars. The 'Over' remained at 13/10 through the entire time the customers were able to bet on it.

Kazuchika Okada .vs. Will Ospreay
As you're sure to know by now, the main event of night seven is - so far - the highest rated match of the tournament.

Kambi had the line set at 4.75 when the market was first installed. The bettors evidently thought the 'Over' had a chance of winning as the price fell from 5/4 to 23/20 by July 13th and was then taken down to 11/10 by July 15th.

It should also be worth noting that the price for the match to get four-and-three-quarters exactly was also cut from 41/20 into 2/1 in the latter part of betting.

The match went over by one full star.

Jon Moxley .vs. Shingo Takagi
Yesterday's match - which saw Jon Moxley continue his undefeated run in the tourney with a win over Shingo Takagi - was given a line of four stars.

From the betting, you can see the prices for both 'Exactly 4 Stars' and 'Under 4 Stars' were lowered last week. The former went from 2/1 to 19/10 and the 'Under' was snipped from 5/4 to 11/10.

The bout was given four-and-a-quarter stars, so it was the 'Over' which turned out to be the correct option. It was 4/5 initially, but closed at 19/20.

Tomohiro Ishii .vs. Tetsuya Naito
The main event of yesterday's show also had an Over/Under market for it.

Tetsuya Naito's win over Tomohiro Ishii was given four-and-a-half stars from Dave Meltzer. Kambi had the line set right on the correct number as customers were offered to bet over, under or 'Exactly' on the line of 4.50.

As you can see below, the consensus appeared to have sided with the 'Over' as it was snipped from 6/5 into 21/20 before July 20th.

The eventual winning selection was 9/4 throughout.

Observer betting will resume on Saturday with the A Block's main event of Kazuchika Okada .vs. KENTA being covered by Kambi.

The line is at 4.25. You can see, in the table below, that the punters have sided with the 'Over' as the option has fallen from 4/5 into 21/50 since the market was first installed on June 26th.
