How Kambi Settled Its G1 Climax 29 Block Points O/U Markets

In the weeks leading into this year's NJPW G1 Climax tournament, the oddsmakers from Kambi installed a handful of Over/Under markets in which customers could place wagers on the amount of block wins a selection of wrestlers picked up in the tourney.

There were six O/Us. Three were for A Block participants while the other half was for competitors in B Block.

A Block
To start, here's how the A Block standings looked at the conclusion of the block rounds.

Hiroshi Tanahashi's A Block Wins
Kambi set the line at 6 for Hiroshi Tanahashi, so customers could place bets on him getting six wins or more or - in its opposing market - five wins or less.

The eventual winner, due to Tanahashi only having four wins in the tournament, was the '5 or Less' option which opened at 9/10 on June 23rd, but was 1/2 when it was last adjusted in early August.

Kazuchika Okada's A Block Wins
Initially, 6 wins was the line set for Kazuchika Okada's block matches with customers offered 11/20 for Okada to have six or more wins or 5/4 for him to have five or less.

The customers backed into the over as the 11/20 was soon down to 1/8 by July 20th.

Okada went on a run of successive wins and, as a result, the line was moved to 8 on July 28th. The '8 or More' and '7 or Less' offerings were both put out at 17/20. It was here that the odds for Okada to have at least seven wins fell. It closed at 1/3.

The current IWGP Heavyweight Champion had seven wins in total. so the winning sides were the '6 or More' in the first phase and then the '7 or less' once the line was moved.

Kota Ibushi's A Block Wins
Seven was the line set for Kota Ibushi's A Block and the G1 Climax winner did just that with seven wins in the round robin part of the tournament.

The eventual winning selection - '7 or More' - was a 7/10 favourite when the bookmakers set the market up in June.

If you look at how the wagering went, you'll notice that the price for '6 or Less' was trimmed in parts of July. This would have coincided with Ibushi's bad start to the tournament as he lost two to begin with and needed to win all of his remaining matches to win the block.

When it was last changed, on August 6th, the customers were offered 9/10 on Ibushi having seven or more wins. The opposing selection closed as a 4/5 favourite.

B Block
Here are the final standings for B Block.

Jay White's B Block Wins
The Jay White O/U was short lived when compared to the other markets in this category. The line was set at seven wins with the '7 or More' option an 11/20 favourite when the market was first published.

A win for '6 or Less' was being offered at 5/4.

White started off the tournament with three losses to his name. The market was gone never to be seen again once White began to pick up the wins to climb into contention. The last price I have is the 1/2 from July 16th, which would have been a day after White's second loss.

Despite the poor start, White did get the six points for those who may have backed him to do '6 or Less'.

Jon Moxley's B Block Wins
When the line for Jon Moxley's B Block matches was first published, the oddsmakers offered '6 or More' and '5 or Less'. The former was a 13/20 favourite to the '5 or Less' at 11/10.

While Moxley began to pick up the points at the start of the tourney, the options were adjusted to '8 or More' and '7 or Less'.

Both of the '..or Less' selections turned out to be the winning sides as Moxley stumbled in the latter rounds and finished off the tournament with 10 points from five wins.

Tetsuya Naito's B Block Wins
Tetsuya Naito's line began at 7 with the option to wager on seven or higher a 4/6 favourite over '6 or Less' at 21/20.

The '..or More' option was backed into 13/20 by July 9th, but - from there, the gamblers sided with Naito getting six or below. By July 26th, '6 or Less' was being offered at 2/5. At this time, Naito had won two out of four matches and was about to lose another a couple of days later. After losing on night 10, to make him go 2-3, Kambi adjusted the line to five wins.

Naito went on to pick up five wins overall, so there was a split in the betting with the '6 or Less' winning in the earlier incarnation of the market and then the '5 or More' option won at 6/5 in the revised edition.

In tomorrow's post, I'll take a look at another G1 Climax market from Kambi.
