In case you are unaware - there are a number of online sportsbooks that write up prop markets to accompany the match odds that are offered each month for World Wrestling Entertainment pay-per-view events. This past month saw a handful of firms offering some unique markets for customers to wager on.
Here's what was available and how they would have been settled.
Kana To Make An Appearance
The Paddy Power Sportsbook had installed a special where customers could bet on Kana making an in-ring appearance during the show. The female Japanese wrestler has just signed with WWE and I was confident that she wouldn't show up at Night of Champions because her first port of call is Florida to become a part of NXT.
The 'No' option was the winning selection here. Its price had dropped from 1/6 to 1/8 in the time that I tracked it.
Seth To Retain Both Titles
This was being offered to bwin Sportsbook customers. There was no way to bet on the 'No', so customers who had wagered on 'Yes' would have lost out.
The oddsmakers' early number had 'Yes' at EVENS. However, twelve days later, it had risen to 10/1.
Ryback To Retain His Intercontinental Championship?
Another market from bwin. It was available in the week before Ryback's title defence against Kevin Owens was announced. The odds at the time were 1/2 and would have resulted in a torn betting slip.
Money in the Bank Contract Executed
This was available from both bwin and Betfair.
It came close to being cashed (if we're going by storyline). It evidently didn't, though. Customers who had wagered on the 'No' would have been winners on the night.
Mystery Partner
Bwin, Betfair and Paddy Power all had markets available where customers could punt on the wrestler Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns elected to be their partner to take on The New Wyatt Family.
The eventual option, Chris Jericho, had been available from all three bookies. The best price I was able to find was 33/1 from bwin.
In-House Appearance
One of Betfair's best props on most PPV weekends is the market where clients can gamble on celebrities associated with wrestling making an in-house appearance on the night.
The traders compile a long list of potential names and it's always fun to look through and predict which stars might end up appearing. For example, the company had Jim Ross available as an option. Personally, I didn't have confidence that JR would be there but what I did know was that he was in town that weekend as he was doing one of his talk shows at a neighbouring venue that weekend. Some customers might have entertained the idea that he would show up at Night of Champions and made a speculative punt on him.
The names that resulted in payouts were: Kane (10/11), Ric Flair (1/3) and Chris Jericho (5/2).
A Referee To Be Knocked Out In Any Match
Another Betfair special. For months, I had been backing the 'Yes' only to fall short. Then - for SummerSlam - it cashed. When the odds for Night of Champions were published, I was originally leaning on the 'No' at 11/10 but didn't end up placing a bet on the outcome in the end.
I would have won. There wasn't a referee knockout spot in any of the bouts on the card. Good job to those who did bet it.
A Title Match To End In A Disqualification
This was one I was more confident in as I felt there would be a match where a titleholder lost via disqualification in order for them to remain champion. The Betfair Sportsbook was offering 'Yes' at 4/6 when the market first went live. I took another look through the market two days later and the odds had fallen to 8/15, so fans had been betting on it.
The WWE World Tag Team Championship fixture ended with The Dudley Boyz winning via DQ.
And that's all for now. Don't forget to check back in through the next few days and weeks as we near to Hell in a Cell. More match and prop markets will surely be open in time for the October 25th event.
