Note About Samoa Joe's Odds

Samoa Joe's odds to win the WWE Universal Championship match at this coming weekend's WWE Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view have dipped with the websites that offer Kambi betting markets.

The Universal Championship challenger - who had opened as a 3/1 underdog before drifting to 4/1 - is back down to 3s.

With Joe's price dipping in the market for the Great Balls of Fire main event, I decided to look over the odds for him to leave SummerSlam 2017 as Universal Champion to see if there was anything to read into the current interest in the challenger.

I noticed that Joe's price has fallen from 10/1 to 7/1 as well. However, so have the odds for Roman Reigns. The Big Dog - who opened at 7/4 - has been cut to 5/4.

The current titleholder has drifted from 3/10 to 1/2.

This seems to be punters backing Joe and Reigns as either one is the most likely successor to Lesnar.

I can sort of understand why Joe's odds have lowered in both of these markets.

It would actually make sense - if anyone thinks Joe is winning not only the match, but the strap on Sunday - to also back him in the SummerSlam market. If WWE really has decided to have Joe as Universal Champion, I highly doubt the company would have him lose in his first major defence. Therefore, the punters who took the 4/1 in the Great Balls of Fire market could also get 10s backing him to be the champion after SummerSlam.

With that said, in the most recent issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote about the plan for SummerSlam - as it stood a few weeks ago - being a Universal Championship match between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns.

The writer mentioned that there could be an 'outside chance' of the plan changing due to how well Samoa Joe has gotten over in the build to this week's main event. With that suggestion out there, it doesn't surprise me to see a few speculative punts on this outside chance.
