As many of you are bound to be aware by now, the XFL made an announcement last night that it had suspended its regular season.
The statement reads:
'Currently, the XFL will not be playing its regular season games. However, all players will be paid their base pay and benefits for the 2020 regular season.
All XFL ticket holders will be issued refunds of credit towards future games. The XFL is committed to playing a full season in 2021 and future years'.
Even though it does not state the reason why, it's safe to conclude that the worldwide threat of coronavirus is the reason behind the abrupt suspension.
Selfishly, I did not like seeing that the league had ended abruptly without rescheduling, but - when you think about it - the coronavirus problems won't be remedied in weeks and, by the time the world will hopefully have a grasp on its spread, it'll be time for college and NFL football.
Unlike the NBA, NHL and other sports leagues, there was little the XFL could do regarding rescheduling. It really is - or was - spring football.
My selfishness about the season closing was because I had tipped either the Houston Roughnecks or DC Defenders to end up as champions before the season began. Both teams were the leaders of their respective divisions ahead of yesterday's statement.
From a weekly betting perspective, I close out at 3-4.
Last week saw me win a bet on the Defenders as +5.5 home underdogs. They won the game straight up with a score of 15-6.
With the regular season now over, the most ironic XFL proposition betting market should end up being settled in favour of the selection with the longer odds.
Kambi released a couple of markets at the start of the year. One of them was titled 'Surpasses The AAF?' and asked customers whether version 2.0 of the XFL would do better than the now defunct Alliance of American Football which went out of business in 2019 after eight weeks of play.
Per Kambi's rule of the market, for the favourite - 'Yes' - to win, the XFL would have had to have played more games than the AAF's season. The wording was 'at least 33 XFL regular season matches to take place before the end of WrestleMania 36'. The key date was April 2nd as the Dallas Renegades versus Houston Roughnecks game would have been the one that surpassed the AAF's fixtures.
The irony is the XFL technically did not surpass the AAF per the rules, but - in the press release (and this could change before next year, obviously) - the league appears confident that it'll return for 2021 and that would mean it did 'Surpass' the AAF.
Also ironic - albeit to a lesser extent - is the fact that WrestleMania 36 is doubtful for April 5th despite the city of Tampa and WWE not budging on making a change.
By the way, look at the error I made in the January 1st post:
I don't know how the NBA's Mavericks would have fared against the Roughnecks!
